PetLab Co. Wild Caught Salmon Bites Review

Soft, chewy, grain-free salmon dog treats with a one-word ingredient list. Here is how they smell, feel, and how my beagle Allie reacted.

PetLab Co. Wild Caught Salmon Bites are worth buying if you want a treat with a one-word ingredient list. They are made from 100% wild-caught salmon, freeze-dried, grain-free, made in the USA, and soft and chewy rather than hard and crunchy. My beagle begged for a second one. Buy it.

She Smelled Them Before I Got the Bag Open

Allie went nutty the second the bag cracked. I had to stop mid-sentence and tell the camera to hold on, because my beagle was already working the air. And yes, when I opened them up, they smell just like salmon, in case you’re wondering. Not a perfume version of salmon. Salmon. Thank you to PetLab Co. for sending these over for her to try. The Smell Is the Trade-Off

If fish smell bothers you, these will bother you. That is the one thing I would flag before you buy. There is no masking agent in here, nothing to soften it, because there is nothing in here except salmon. I keep mine closed up tight. For me that is a fair trade for a one-ingredient treat, but I would not hand these to someone who gags at the fish counter.

Soft and Chewy, Not Hard and Crunchy

The texture is soft and chewy, and for an older dog that matters more than people think. She does not want to fight a rock-hard biscuit. These give under her teeth and she can work through one without me standing there worried about her mouth.

A short monthly email with the products I tested + actually liked. No spam.

Every bite is a little different in shape, but they are all about the same size. That is just how they are molded. I liked that, because it means I know what one treat costs her calorie-wise and I can break one if I want to stretch it. Freeze-dried usually means brittle. These are not brittle.

The omega-3s matter more than the novelty of a one-word ingredient list. Coat and skin benefits are the long game, the kind of thing you notice weeks in when someone tells you your dog looks good. Grain-free and made in the USA are table stakes for me at this price point, and they clear both.

What You Are Paying For

Single-ingredient freeze-dried treats cost more than a bag of shaped biscuits, and that is the math here. What you get back is a treat you can hand over without squinting at the label, because there is no label to squint at. One ingredient. That is it.

One thing I will pass along: the price on these moves around a lot. It is worth looking at the live price on Amazon to see where they are sitting right now. They are also selling well lately.

Would I Buy These Again?

Yes. The moment that sold me was after she sat for hers and still wanted another one so bad. I had to tell her no, sorry baby girl. To her it is just a treat. To me it is omega-3 and salmon and nothing else, which is a nice thing to be able to say about something you hand your dog regularly.

If your dog is older, or if you have ever put a treat back on the shelf because the ingredient list read like a chemistry midterm, these are a straightforward yes. That tells me enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I store freeze-dried salmon dog treats once the bag is open?

Seal the bag tight and keep it somewhere cool and dry. There are no preservatives doing work here, it’s just salmon, and the smell will find its way out of a loosely folded bag. I keep mine clipped shut in a cabinet.

Can I use these as training treats?

They work well for it because the texture is soft enough to break into smaller pieces. The motivation is there. For a small dog I would tear one bite into two or three.

Do these go with PetLab Co.’s other products?

Yes, PetLab Co. pairs these with their Probiotic Chews. I only tried the salmon bites here, so I can’t speak to the chews from my own use, but they’re from the same line if you want to look at both.
