After 3 years and roughly 20 of these solar motion sensor lights around my yard, here's how they hold up, install, and light my back porch.

Three Years In, I’m Still Buying These Solar Motion Sensor Lights
I grabbed this new pack to light the back porch where I step off at night, a spot I’d been ignoring until I nearly missed the edge in the dark. That’s how it always starts with these. If you want the ones I use, you can check the current price on Amazon here.
By now I probably have 20 of them spread out in different areas. They run all along my back fence, out at my gate, and I even have them lighting up my bird feeders so I can see them at night. They light up my whole back fence and gate without needing a single wire or outlet. Most outdoor lights I’ve tested need wiring or dead batteries after one season.
149 LEDs, 800 Lumens, and Three Modes to Pick From
800 lumens of cold white light covers up to 322 square feet and actually brightens a whole yard section in practice. The panel is a 22% high-efficiency solar cell on top, so there’s no wiring, no plugging in, nothing to run. You just place them where they get good sun.
The motion sensor reads a 120° wide angle and picks up movement from 16 to 26 feet out. And the part I really love is the three lighting modes. You can run constant light, motion-only, or a dim-until-motion setting. You adjust it all with one button at the front of the light.
What They Look Like Once the Sun Goes Down
The dim-until-motion mode is the standout: a soft baseline glow that jumps to full brightness the instant motion is detected. I walked closer to the ones out in the yard at night and you could watch them turn on as I got near. That dim-until-motion setting is my favorite because you get a soft baseline glow, then full brightness the second something moves.
I tested the sensor by covering it with my hand. It reads that as dark, so the light comes on. Take my hand off and it responds right away. Simple, but it tells you the sensor is doing its job. Along my back fence they work phenomenal, and now that I’ve added one to my porch post, the whole area lights up when I step off at night.
The One Spot I’m Not Sure About
I’m a little bit wondering how the porch light is going to do where I just put it. That’s the truth. I know it should get morning sun, but it’s not the wide-open, all-day sun my fence lights get. Solar is only as good as the light hitting the panel, so a shadier mounting spot is always the gamble. I’ll do an update video in a couple of weeks and let you guys know how it holds up back there. If your ideal spot is tucked in shade, keep that in mind before you count on it.

One more thing that’s easy to forget: there’s a plastic film over the panel when they arrive. Peel that off, or your light won’t get a full charge. I also leave every new set out in the sun all day before I even install them, so they start off fully charged.

Install Is Two Screws and You’re Done
Two screws in under a minute, no wiring or electrician required. There are just two screws to put in place, and just like that, it’s up. The pack comes with two small screws and two anchors, though I’ve never used the anchors. They also give you peel-off sticky pads if you’d rather not drill, plus a little instruction pamphlet that walks you through all the modes.
You can grab them in a two-pack, a four-pack, or a six-pack, so you buy however many the job needs. That’s how I ended up with around 20. I started with a couple, liked them, and kept adding them wherever a dark spot annoyed me.
Where These Make the Most Sense
These earn their spot anywhere you need a light and have nowhere to plug one in. My fence line runs too far from the house for an extension cord, my gate is nowhere near an outlet, and I wasn’t about to call an electrician for bird feeders. That’s exactly what 20 of these now cover, and the porch post I just added is the newest problem they’re solving.
If you’ve got a long backyard perimeter, buy multiples and space them out. Because there’s no wiring, you’re not limited to spots near an outlet. That’s the whole point of going solar here. Since there’s no monthly anything and no cord to trip over, they suit renters and homeowners alike.
My Advice Before You Put Them Up
Peel the plastic film off the solar panel and set them in full sun all day before mounting, both take two minutes and both matter from day one. Skip either step and you’re starting with a partial charge and wondering why the light cut out at 2 a.m.
Then pick your mode based on the spot. Constant light for a walkway you use nightly, motion-only where you just want an alert, or dim-until-motion for the best of both. Aim the sensor toward the path something would actually walk. And mount them where they’ll catch the most sun, because that’s what keeps them running. They’re rated IP65 waterproof, so rain and snow aren’t a problem for the housing. Charging comes down to sun, though, so shorter or overcast winter days mean less runtime than peak summer. Put them where they catch the most daylight and they’ll do their job year-round.
Can they stay outside all year, or do I need to bring them in?
They stay outside year-round. Mine live on the fence and gate through every season and I don’t take them in. The ABS housing and IP65 rating are built for staying mounted in the weather.
How much maintenance do they need?
Almost none. Wipe the solar panel off now and then so dust or pollen doesn’t block the charge, and that’s about it. There are no bulbs to swap and no batteries to buy separately.
Will they turn on for a dog or animal walking by?
